Writing Fundamentals: Sample Thesis Statements For College
In any paper, the thesis statement is absolutely the most important one in the entire paper. It guides the direction of the piece. When you are in college, it is no longer just one statement; it is actually a series of several comments. Additionally, an introduction can be in two paragraphs, rather than just one. - The length of the paper will guide the amount of main points-if you have been assigned a two page composition; you cannot have more than two main points. The length will not allow for more than that to be properly supported.
- A multi-sentence with two main points may look this this
William Shakespeare was the master of symbolism. His sonnets and poems are filled with mythological symbols.
- The Taming of the Shrew portray the main character Kate as a shrew-like animal though her words and actions. (The writer would discuss the symbolism as shown through the two points; actions and words).
Watch the jargon-the introduction is no place to load down the paper with unknown jargon and language. Be clear, simple, and easy to understand.
- A sentence filled with jargon might look like this (and should be avoided)-
The juxtaposition and foils of the diabolical male character was enhanced by his wonton ways and Rasputin like plots.
- Be as general as possible at this point-the time for details and specifics will come later in the piece.
- A nice and general example may read like this-
The settings of Midsummer Night’s Dream will help to depict the characters and their mixed up love.
- Think out of the box-the professor or graduate student has read many, many papers. You have to approach the subject with a unique and innovative point of view in order for it to stand out from the other pieces.
- Read the work-if you are analyzing or responding to a piece of writing, make sure to read it. The professor at the university will know if you have not read the assignment. I once read an entire composition in which the author of the piece used the wrong name for the main female character.
- Proof it-this is the first thing that is read by the audience. Do not have errors or mistakes. A nice sample would be-
Lenny in Mice and Men is bound for failure by his surroundings, role, and place in life. He wants to have the good life with a farm and bunnies, but the obstacles are far too great for him to overcome.
