How To Succeed At Your Qualitative Dissertation Defense

As soon as you’ve finished working on your dissertation, you think that you can take a break and relax. However, you can’t be more wrong. Your defense is a crucial stage of getting PhD, and it’s extremely important to do it well. Here are some tips that can help you succeeding in this difficult task:

  1. Be prepared.
    • Decide what part of your dissertation you would like to emphasize on.
    • Prepare your thesis carefully. Reread it in order to correct all possible mistakes.
    • Remember that you are the only expert on this subject, try to use simple language.
    • Make an effective presentation that will capture the attention of the audience.
    • Don’t let procrastination get to you. You should finish with preparations as soon as possible so that you have time to go through slides again and change them if it’s needed.
    • Decide what you’re going to dress.
  2. Practice your speech.
    • Remember that rehearsing your defense talk is the most important task. Try to create the realistic atmosphere by asking your family and friends to play the roles of the members of the committee. You should think about the possible questions and the appropriate answers to them.
    • Do not spend too much time on talking on your own. The members of the committee may have their questions, they are interested in discussion and a long speech can bore them to death.
    • Make sure your oral and visual presentations match up.
  3. Learn from the mistakes of others.
    • Visit dissertation defense meetings and try to think critically what other doctoral candidates do right or wrong.
    • Ask your colleges to tell you about their personal experience of the dissertation defense.
  4. Remember how valuable your health is.
    • Sleep at least 8 hours and take breaks during your work on the presentation.
    • Do not drink too much coffee or energetic drinks.
    • Remember to eat properly.
  5. Do your best during your dissertation defense.
    • Stay calm and confident no matter what happens. Even if you don’t have an answer to some question, it is not a disaster. Keep in mind that the members of the committee usually ask their questions because they’re interested in the topic. There is no need to fear – no one has a goal to humiliate you in front of your colleges.
    • Be polite to the audience and the members of the committee. Introduce yourself and the subject of your research at the beginning of your speech; thank for the attention and ask if there are any questions after you’re finished.

In conclusion, you should remember if you know your dissertation well you have no reason to worry.
